Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park is located in southern Tanzania, approximately 625 kilometers from Dar es Salaam. It is over 20,226 square kilometers and forms part of the large Rungwa-Kizigo-Muhesi ecosystem, one of the biggest wild areas on the African continent.
Ruaha is a biodiversity hot spot teeming with life. The park is home to over 10,000 elephants, great prides of lions, and one of Tanzania's largest cheetah and leopard populations. It is also a haven for such rarely seen animals as African wild dogs, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and greater kudu—one of the Ruaha's flagship species that boasts impressive spiraling horns.
Its landscapes present an interesting mix of baobab forests and acacia savannahs, as well as rocky escarpments and seasonal wetlands. Drawing a wide range of wildlife, the Great Ruaha River is a major lifeline, with the most vigorous activity occurring during the dry season, when it truly comes alive.

The Great Ruaha River
Flowing right through the heart of Ruaha, the Great Ruaha River is part of the park's very ecosystem. This river quenches the thirst of many species of animals, thus bringing huge herds of elephants and buffaloes to the river. In addition, the river banks are a haven for lions and leopards that lie in wait to hunt their prey that come to drink water. The proximity of this river to the park's accommodations makes it an ideal spot for observing wild animals, especially during the dry season.
Baobab Trees
One of the most typical trees in Ruaha is the baobab tree, which can be noted for its massive trunk and branches reaching high into the sky. Such majestic trees give a perfect setting for photography, and they provide a significant ecological contribution to the park. Animals feed on fruit, bark, and leaves; therefore, species find shelter within the baobab trees themselves.

Over 570 species of birds are found in Ruaha, which has become a haven for birdwatchers. Greater Kudu

African Wild Dogs

The Seasons
Dry Season
June - October
The dry season is the best time to visit Ruaha to see wildlife. As water becomes scarce, animals congregate around the Great Ruaha River, making it easy to see many different species. Herds of elephants, lions, and buffaloes are often seen in large numbers. The area is dry and the vegetation is scarce, thus making it easy to see animals. This time is also the best for birdwatching as the resident species are very active and the migratory birds start to arrive. The cooler temperatures and clear skies provide ideal conditions for safaris.
Wet Season
November - May
The wet season rejuvenates the park with its lush greenery and abundant water. While the wildlife may be more spread out during this period, the beauty of the park is not in doubt. The rain also attracts migratory birds, making the scenery for photographers incredibly colorful. In addition, the presence of newborn animals during the wet season adds to the feeling of renewal in the park. Some roads are closed, but the park is open if you're looking for a quieter, less crowded time.
