Lake Manyara National Park

Manyara National Park is a place of beauty in northern Tanzania, known for its diversified ecosystems, outstanding landscapes, and unique wildlife. Stretching from the Rift Valley escarpment to its alkaline shores, this relatively small preserve offers a rewarding safari experience. Famous for its tree-climbing lions and colorful avifauna, Manyara National Park is a haven for nature lovers and photographers.

Lake Manyara National Park is in northern Tanzania, about 126 kilometers to the west of Arusha. It covers an area of about 325 square kilometers and lies within the Great Rift Valley. Its proximity to major safari routes makes it an ideal stop for those on a tour of the northern circuit.

Though relatively small in size, Lake Manyara is well known for its remarkable variety of habitats, including groundwater forests, open savannas, acacia woodlands, and the large alkaline lake itself. These support a tremendous wealth of wildlife. Large herds of elephants wander through the forests, while zebras, giraffes, and buffalo graze on the grassy plains. The park is also well known for its unique population of tree-climbing lions, which are often seen lounging in acacia trees.The lake is a haven for avian life, attracting over 400 species, among them thousands of flamingos, pelicans, storks, and herons. During the wet season, this lake becomes a very important breeding area for these waterbirds, presenting a lively kaleidoscope of color and movement.

The Seasons

Dry Season

June - October

The dry season, from June to October, offers excellent conditions for game viewing and hiking. During this time, the vegetation is sparse, making wildlife easier to spot in the park’s diverse habitats. Animals tend to gather around water sources, increasing chances of observing iconic species such as giraffes, buffaloes, and even the elusive leopard. The cooler temperatures and clear skies make it an ideal season for outdoor activities like trekking to Mount Meru or exploring the Momella Lakes. Photographers will appreciate the crisp lighting and stunning landscapes during this season.

Wet Season

November - May

The wet season, from November to May, transforms the park into a lush green haven teeming with life. This is the best time for birdwatching as migratory birds arrive, adding to the park’s rich avian diversity. The Momella Lakes become vibrant with activity, particularly with the arrival of large flamingo flocks. The rainforests are alive with the sounds of Colobus monkeys and other forest species, offering a unique experience for visitors seeking serenity and biodiversity. While wildlife viewing may be slightly more challenging due to dense foliage, the park’s scenery and unique experiences make it a rewarding time to visit.
